St. Petersburg’s city council will continue discussing construction crane safety and child care benefits for city employees, following Councilmember Gina Driscoll’s push to prioritize these issues.
Urgency around crane safety grew after Hurricane Milton in October 2024, when a crane collapsed into a downtown office building.
Driscoll advocates for clearer communication with residents on their proximity to cranes and increased public awareness during storms.
Although state law restricts local control over crane operations, the city is working on improved notification procedures to boost safety.
At the same time, the council is looking into child care support for city workers, especially after a recent employee survey showed high demand for backup care, notably among emergency responders.
