Junior Achievement's Renamed Program Continues to Inspire Future Leaders |
Muma BizTown, formerly known as JA BizTown, has been a cornerstone of experiential learning for elementary students in Hillsborough, Pasco, Polk, and Sarasota counties for two decades.
In January 2026, Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay honored long-time supporters Pam and Les Muma by renaming the program to reflect their significant contributions.
Each year, approximately 20,000 students immerse themselves in this simulated city, stepping into roles as workers and citizens.
One student even takes on the role of mayor, providing a unique leadership experience.
Local businesses such as Fifth Third Bank, iHeartMedia, The UPS Store, TECO Energy, The Florida Aquarium, and Tampa General Hospital have established storefronts within Muma BizTown, offering students a tangible connection to the community.
Prior to their visit, students collaborate with teachers to understand business operations, including participating in job interviews for various positions.
During their day at Muma BizTown, they earn paychecks and make purchases, simulating real-world economic activities.
Since its inception, over 300,000 children have benefited from this program, which aims to inspire critical thinking about future careers by aligning classroom learning with real-world applications.
The renaming to Muma BizTown acknowledges the Muma family's enduring support, including a $5 million planned gift and $2 to $3 million in operational funding.
As Pam Muma stated, "We truly believe in Junior Achievement’s mission and the power of experiential learning to change lives."
To celebrate the 20th anniversary, Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay is recognizing partner companies through tribute days, where company leaders engage with students and are honored for their contributions.
Additionally, a Spirit of Achievement event is scheduled for March 5 at the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street, focusing on Muma BizTown's milestone.
Tickets are available through Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay.
The program's roots trace back to Enterprise Village, developed by the Pinellas Education Foundation in 1989.
Recognizing the value of real-world experiences, Junior Achievement USA acquired rights to the model, leading to the establishment of over 30 BizTown locations nationwide.
This expansion underscores Tampa Bay's innovative spirit in education.
