Kathleen Edwards Embraces St. Petersburg as Her New Home |
The Canadian singer-songwriter finds inspiration and community in Florida's Sunshine City |
Kathleen Edwards has found a new muse in St. Petersburg, Florida.
The acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter and her husband, property developer Sean McAdam, purchased a home in the city in 2022, making a permanent move to the Sunshine State.
Edwards' latest album, Billionaire, released in August, has received glowing reviews.
Critics praise her sharp lyrics and robust melodies, often categorized under the Americana genre.
One reviewer noted, "Edwards' voice elevates the storytelling, revealing characters, colors, and context with the slightest inflection."
The album's rich sound is partly due to the collaboration with Jason Isbell, who co-produced the record and contributed his signature guitar work.
Isbell also brought in members of his band, the 400 Unit, to shape the album's sonic landscape.
In a recent interview, Edwards expressed her affection for St. Petersburg.
"I really love the weather here," she said.
"What I noticed as a new resident is that everyone is in a good mood here. That is undeniable."
She highlighted the city's vibrant waterfront, extensive bike trails, and the friendly community as key factors in her decision to relocate.
Edwards also shared her aspirations to contribute to Florida's music scene.
"I'm pretty dedicated to the vision that I want to take Jimmy Buffett's baton," she said.
"I would love to be his successor in Florida's really magical songwriting history."
She aims to build an audience in the state and facilitate tours that reflect the evolving cultural landscape of cities like St. Petersburg.
Reflecting on her career, Edwards acknowledged the challenges of the music industry and the importance of taking breaks to gain perspective.
"Touring is hard, and trying to make your balance sheet work in music is really hard," she admitted.
Her collaboration with Isbell provided a renewed sense of hope and direction.
"For him to say 'Hey, I'll produce your record' was an incredible gesture on his part," she said.
Edwards' integration into the St. Petersburg community is evident.
She performed at Bayboro Brewing on a recent Saturday, bringing her music to local fans.
Her presence adds to the city's growing reputation as a hub for artists and musicians.
As St. Petersburg continues to evolve, residents like Edwards contribute to its dynamic cultural fabric, blending local charm with international artistry. |
