Leadership St. Pete's 2026 Class Embarks on Community Project to Revitalize Lealman and Asian Neighborhood Family Center

Enhancing Facilities to Support Local Families and Children

The Leadership St. Pete (LSP) Class of 2026 has chosen the Lealman and Asian Neighborhood Family Center (LANFC) as the focus of their annual community project. This initiative aims to upgrade the center's outdoor spaces, including the playground and front entrance, to better serve the community.

Established in 2001, LANFC offers a range of services such as a food pantry, tax assistance, computer lab access, and English language classes. It also provides youth programs like after-school care and summer camps. The center plays a crucial role in supporting the diverse Lealman community, including a significant Vietnamese American population. Debbie Viveiros, chair of the LSP Class of 2026, highlighted the importance of this project, noting that witnessing community members seeking assistance firsthand deeply impacted the class. She emphasized that Lealman often doesn't receive as much attention as other areas in need, making this project particularly meaningful.

The planned renovations include replacing the deteriorating deck leading to the playground and enhancing the front entrance. LANFC's executive director, Donna McGill, stressed that these improvements are vital for the safety and well-being of the children who use the facilities daily.

The selection process for the community project involved an open application to local nonprofits, followed by site visits and presentations. The LSP Class of 2026 is now focused on fundraising efforts, aiming to raise $50,000 through grants and events. The first fundraising event, a trivia night, is scheduled for February 24 at 3 Daughters Brewing.

A day of service is planned for May 16, during which class members will personally contribute to the renovations. This hands-on approach underscores the program's commitment to community engagement and leadership development.

Leadership St. Pete, established in 1970 and organized by the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce, is one of the oldest leadership programs in the nation. It aims to educate participants on local social, economic, business, and political issues, fostering leaders who are prepared to make a lasting impact on the community.

Viveiros, who also serves as vice president and commercial relationship manager at the Bank of Tampa, noted that the community project exposes class members to the importance of giving back. For many, it's their first experience with fundraising or board service, opening their eyes to the significant needs within the area.
