St. Petersburg's MLK Parade Secures Continued Tourism Funding

New Organizers Maintain Financial Support Amid Event Expansion

St. Petersburg's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade will continue to receive its established tourism funding, ensuring the event's ongoing success under new leadership.

The Pinellas County Tourist Development Council recently approved a $65,000 award to the Tampa Bay Collard Green Festival, Inc. (TBCGF), the new organizers of the parade. This decision comes despite initial financial concerns, reflecting confidence in the event's future impact.

TBCGF has introduced an ambitious initiative titled "45 Days of Excellence," merging the traditional MLK Parade with their signature festival. This expanded celebration is anticipated to attract approximately 15,000 attendees, generate 1,200 room nights, and contribute an estimated $1.05 million to the local economy.

Craig Campbell, director of community engagement for Visit St. Pete-Clearwater (VSPC), expressed enthusiasm about the organizers' marketing strategies, particularly their outreach efforts in cities like Atlanta, Jacksonville, Orlando, and South Florida. "We were really encouraged by their spending in these areas," Campbell noted.

The MLK Parade, a cornerstone of St. Petersburg's civil rights history since 1986, was previously managed by Advantage Village Academy (AVA). After AVA chose not to renew their contract, the city awarded a three-year, $690,000 agreement to TBCGF, following thorough deliberation.

Highlighting the upcoming parade on January 19, 2026, TBCGF has secured performances from esteemed marching bands of Tuskegee University and Alabama A&M University, both renowned historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

While some officials, including County Commission Chair Brian Scott, have suggested implementing financial fitness assessments for future applicants, the current funding approval underscores the community's commitment to honoring Dr. King's legacy through vibrant and inclusive celebrations.
