St. Petersburg Council Advances Crane Safety and Child Care Initiatives

Councilmember Driscoll's Advocacy Keeps Key Discussions Active

St. Petersburg's city council is set to continue deliberations on construction crane safety and potential child care benefits for city employees, following Councilmember Gina Driscoll's successful efforts to keep these topics on the agenda.

During the January 22 meeting, a routine vote aimed to remove several items from committee referral lists. However, Driscoll emphasized the importance of ongoing discussions, particularly concerning tower crane safety and employee child care support.

The focus on crane safety intensified after Hurricane Milton in October 2024, when a crane collapsed into a downtown office building. Driscoll highlighted the need for improved communication with residents about their proximity to such structures and the associated risks during severe weather events.

"We had some really good discussions during that time – a couple of ideas came up," Driscoll noted. "Staff seemed receptive, and they were supposed to come back with what their new procedure was going to be, what their improved procedure was going to be."

Despite state regulations limiting local authority over crane operations, Driscoll stressed the city's role in enhancing public safety through better notification processes.

In parallel, the council is revisiting the topic of providing child care benefits to city employees. An employee survey conducted in mid-2025 revealed significant interest in backup care services, especially among emergency responders. Driscoll underscored the importance of supporting the city's workforce, stating, "I know I’m not the only city council member who has cranes in their district, but I have a bunch of them. And I would very much like to have that answer and be able to tell the residents of my district, at least, that there is more that we are going to do in the future."

City Administrator Rob Gerdes acknowledged progress in mapping and notification efforts related to crane safety and expressed support for continuing discussions on both issues. The council unanimously agreed to keep these items on their respective committee referral lists, ensuring that both crane safety and child care benefits remain active topics in future meetings.

These ongoing discussions reflect St. Petersburg's commitment to addressing critical safety concerns and enhancing support for its employees, demonstrating a proactive approach to community well-being.
