Teens Who Care St. Petersburg Empowers Youth to Support Local Nonprofits

In St. Petersburg, a group of dedicated teenagers has united to make a significant impact on their community through philanthropy.

Teens Who Care St. Petersburg, inspired by the successful 100 Women Who Care model, convenes biannual meetings at the St. Petersburg Woman’s Club.

During these gatherings, three local nonprofits present their missions, and members vote to award the Impact Award grant to one organization.

Each participating teen contributes $25, collectively raising substantial funds.

The organization held its inaugural meeting on January 30, 2025, with approximately 130 students from various Pinellas County middle and high schools in attendance.

At this event, Charlie’s Champs, a nonprofit providing special events and adaptive equipment to children with disabilities, received the Impact Award.

Teens Who Care President Simi Damani, a senior at Shorecrest Preparatory School, emphasized the importance of youth involvement in philanthropy.

“We believe that collaboration can have a profound impact on the community,” she stated.

Vice President Kate Nordby, a junior at Clearwater Central Catholic High School, added, “I enjoy learning about the problems that are in our community. A lot of us don’t really understand the problems that people go through because we can’t really imagine them. We don’t necessarily have to relate to these challenges, but to do something about them feels good.”

To identify nonprofits for support, Teens Who Care members distribute applications and promote opportunities via social media.

A student board reviews submissions and selects three organizations to present at each meeting.

The chosen nonprofits address diverse causes, including healthcare assistance and domestic violence support.

Participants are encouraged to engage further with these organizations through volunteer opportunities.

The teens aspire to set an example and inspire similar initiatives in other communities and states.
