Documentary Sheds Light on St. Pete Boxing Club's Legacy

Local filmmaker unveils the untold story of a gym that produced world champions

St. Petersburg's renowned yet understated boxing gym is finally stepping into the spotlight.

For decades, the St. Pete Boxing Club has been a crucible for talent, molding fighters who have clinched world titles.

Despite its impressive track record, the gym's rich history has remained largely unnoticed by the broader public.

That narrative is set to change with the release of a new documentary.

Charlie King, an 18-year-old filmmaker and dedicated trainee at the gym, has taken it upon himself to chronicle its storied past.

His film, "Successors of St. Pete: The St. Pete Boxing Club Story," is slated for its premiere this Tuesday at The Beach Theatre.

King expressed his motivation, stating, "I've seen many videos on Winky Wright and Keith Thurman, but never one on the gym overall. I was just hoping that no one would get the idea before me. I think someone like me, who knows the people and has been in the gym, would be the correct person to do it."

Coach Ray Milton echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of an insider's perspective in capturing the essence of the gym's culture and its uncanny ability to develop both boxers and individuals.

Established in July 1982 along 4th Street South, the St. Pete Boxing Club quickly became a sanctuary for underserved and at-risk youth.

It has been the training ground for luminaries like David Santos, Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy, and Winky Wright, all of whom rose to prominence under its roof.

The gym's unassuming exterior belies the greatness achieved within.

Inside, walls are adorned with yellow-tinged newspaper clippings, vintage photos, and promotional posters featuring some of the greatest fighters to ever lace up their gloves.

The facility's no-frills environment underscores its focus on hard work and dedication over aesthetics.

King, who relocated to St. Pete from New Jersey in 2021, was drawn to the gym's legacy after hearing about its success in fostering champions.

His passion for boxing, ignited at 13, combined with his filmmaking aspirations, led him to embark on this project.

Filming for "Successors" began in March and concluded in October.

King managed to secure interviews with local boxing legends, including Wright and Thurman, providing an intimate look into the gym's impact on their careers.

The documentary's trailer has already garnered attention on social media, hinting at the profound stories awaiting viewers.

As the premiere approaches, the community eagerly anticipates a film that not only celebrates the gym's legacy but also inspires future generations to step into the ring.
